Jackie Kruger (Die Burger) has referred to Spies’ work as “protest art”, in the interview Spies discusses the genesis of a set of four paintings “Power Play”. In these works symbolic expression is given to concepts of power and energy, raising the question whether there will ever be victors. The idea of using art to express protest, was clearly visible in the “EXPORT” exhibition with its focus on the destruction of works of art and their removal from their original context, which could result in a loss of much of their original meaning and value, at the same time compromising their identity. Not only have thousands of indigenous works of art been taken from Africa to first world countries, but with them millions of people as slaves.” (Caroline Rabie, in an interview, February 2002)
