"Where does one start? With Spies - there is so much to tell - about how he was my role model when I started out as a sculptor. How well do I remember his prize-winning clay head exhibited on the 1975 Brickor exhibition. I was impressed by that work - it became an icon in my life - the way it was handled - the authority in its construction, which was at once loose and self-assured. I wanted to have made that piece."
"I could start by telling you of Spies' influence on a generation of artists. He was teacher and mentor to a long list of luminaries in the fields of art and art education. I can mention but a few - Tina van der Walt, Suzette Munnik, Willem Boshoff, Karin Boyum, Rita Tasker and Muffin Stevens. I could also choose to talk about Spies' success as the first South African recipient of the British Council scholarship (for art). He was one of only nine students selected world wide for this scholarship. He attend St. Martin's School of Art for two years as a postgraduate student during which time he was seconded to the studio of Henry Moore."
